John Starr, Centre Director, and Ian Deary, previous Centre Co-Director (2011-2016) are part of the team that found high blood levels of homocysteine (an amino acid associated with stroke and other vascular disease) more than doubles the risk of dementia independent of the effects of vitamin B12, folic acid and antioxidant micronutrient status.
The report concluded that further trials to reduce homocysteine are warranted.
